AFTER HEAVY RAIN, WATER DRAINS FROM THE MOUNTAINS SURROUNDING KINGSTON, TURNING PEACEFUL STREAMS INTO EPIC DISPLAYS OF NATURAL POWER

I always have a camera on my morning run, a trail that starts by the lake and climbs 200 metres to a lookout over the town. The track crosses a lovely little stream that tumbles a thousand metres down the mountainside. The gently cascading brook becomes a powerful torrent after a night of heavy rain. i use an iPhone XS to do all my video. Being waterproof, it is great when you find a hidden grotto with water dripping all around you..

When it rains on the mountains near Queenstown in the Southern Lakes of the South Island of New Zealand, water cascades thousands of feet from the peaks to the lake. In Kingston, a hidden gem just 30 minutes south of Queenstown, I set out to capture water in motion in the verdant forests that clothe the mountainside above the township.

If you have been stuck at home, this is a time to get out, explore, learn, and create. Why visit the Southern Lakes in winter when it’s at its most magnificent?
