Embark on a journey to the Wild West Coast of New Zealand

Wild West Coast - 3 Day Private Photography Tour

Join us for an exclusive photography expedition to the untamed Wild West Coast of Te Wai Pounamu, New Zealand’s South Island. This remote region, framed by the majestic Southern Alps to the east and pristine white beaches pounded by the Southern Ocean to the west, boasts ancient rainforests, serene lakes, and meandering rivers.

Here, the raw power of nature is always on display: colossal glaciers carve their way through the alpine landscape, while braided rivers flow swiftly across lush green plains, eventually merging with the sea. Water is a constant presence, and untouched wetlands provide a sanctuary for a diverse array of bird species.

Our 3-day private photography tour offers a glimpse into this extraordinary environment. Tailored to accommodate weather conditions, lighting, your photography expertise, and the rest of your New Zealand itinerary, our goal is for you to capture images you’ll proudly showcase—whether on social media, in a photobook, on your wall, or even in an art gallery. With our base for 2 nights in comfortable accommodation in Fox Glacier we are well placed to explore the ancient forests, rivers, lakes and the wild coast under the backdrop of the majestic alps.

For those interested, we also offer 3-day tours focusing on the upper West Coast to capture the beauty of the Paparoa and Kahurangi coastline, as well as an extended 5-6 day tour covering the entire West Coast region. Please don't hesitate to contact us for more details.

Day 1

Our tour commences in Queenstown, winding through the breathtaking Crown Range, past the majestic lakes Wanaka and Hawea, and into the Haast Pass. As we descend from the arid, mountainous tussock terrain, we enter a dense Beech forest, tracing the path of fast-flowing rivers that offer excellent opportunities for capturing a variety of stunning waterfalls.

Upon reaching the coast at Haast, we turn northward, arriving at our accommodations in Fox. Here, you’ll have time to witness either the sun setting over the snow-capped Alps or the dramatic Tasman Coast.

Day 2

An early start awaits on Day 2 as we aim to capture the sunrise at Lake Matheson. Under the right conditions, Mount Cook and the Southern Alps in the distance are beautifully reflected and framed by the tranquil waters and lush Beech forest. Throughout the day, we’ll explore the Fox Glacier and Franz Josef area, with options to venture into the forest along various walking trails or explore pristine wetlands and lagoons—abodes for numerous migratory bird species.

Weather permitting, there’s also the possibility of a helicopter excursion (at additional cost) to explore the upper reaches. We’ll conclude the day by capturing the forest and snow-capped peaks during sunset.

Day 3

Our journey continues as we make our way back down the West Coast, immersing ourselves in the magnificent rainforest of the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage area. Crossing back over the Haast Pass, we bid farewell to this enchanting region and return to Queenstown.

Along the way, we will have the opportunity to capture the beauty of the areas we missed during our upward journey, ensuring that no moment of this extraordinary adventure is left uncaptured.

Amazing experience! Martin is the best guide I have ever met. He is a professional landscape photographer. He shared a lot of photography tips with us. He has a strong passion about landscaping photography. He is very knowledgeable about the local history. He told us a lot about the old gold mining days. He knows a lot of secret photo shooting spots and stopped the car several times to let us take photos. His driving skill is great. We felt very safe. His communication was great. We had very nice conversations with him. We liked his narratives very much! The Skippers Canyon itself is absolutely beautiful! The scenic road is gorgeous. The experience is amazing!

Awesome - highly recommendable We went to two different locations. First we went to the Remarkables and did some very good shots of the area from high up and some artsy shots of a winding street. After that we took Skippers Road and wow, what a great landscape. It was even better than the first location. Martin was great and took the time to show me how to take the best pictures. I can highly this tour. Time was over way too soon.

A wonderful experience! My wife and I were absolutely thrilled with this day tour. Martin, our tour guide, did an outstanding job. He took us to places that we would not have gone on our own. One such place was Skippers Canyon. We would never have driven that ourselves. The scenery was magnificent! He also showed us photo tips on our smartphones that were very helpful; features we didn't know about. The tour was money and time well spent. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Thank you, Martin. Kind regards, Dave and Helen Horner, Fredericksburg, Virginia, USA.

A great day out photographing the area around Queenstown The day was well spent with Martin showing us a number of locations around Queenstown that were would definitely not have found on our own. He was very knowledgeable about the area and can accomodate photographers at any level. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone considering doing it.

Great way to get up close and personal with Queenstown! This is a great option for someone looking to get a "local's perspective" of Queenstown and take a trip to lesser-known spots. I was (am) new to photography (I bought my first camera specifically for this trip) and Martin was a patient teacher. He was great at adapting his approach to my level of skill. During the day, not only did I learn and practice different techniques to compose photographs and learn some of the features of my camera, but I got to visit many "off the beaten path" spots to photograph! This trip left me feeling like I had really gotten to know Queenstown and the surrounding areas. Martin was very flexible, friendly and helpful. I couldn't recommend this trip more to someone looking to get to know Queenstown and capture some great pictures!

Well worth day of photograph around Queenstown and Southern Lakes Had a great day with Martin taking photographs around Queenstown. We were able to visit many places ordinary tour group, or self-tour won't able to find and get to. Martin is great teacher, helped me in composition, using of light even operating my own camera. Specially enjoyed the "local" touch at the lunch spot and visiting around Kingstown.

Wonderful private photography tour Thanks to Martin for a great day of photography. With Martin's inside knowledge of the area, we were able to get to some areas well away from crowds and photograph the beautiful varied landscapes around Queenstown. And to learn and practice getting compositions that work.
